Give an instructor access to specific groups

In a space with several groups — classes, branches, or LMS courses — you can make an instructor responsible for some groups only. That instructor sees and grades the learners in their groups, and no one else.

💡 Before you start: groups must be turned on for your organization, and your space needs at least one group on its Groups tab. An organization admin turns groups on with Enable Space Groups under Organization Management → Preferences. To set an instructor’s scope, you must be the space owner or a space Admin.

Choose an instructor’s groups from the Members tab

  1. Open the space and go to the Members tab.
  2. In the member’s row, set the role to Instructor. The Instructor scope dialog opens.
  3. Choose one option:
    • All groups in the space: the instructor sees every learner in the space.
    • Selected groups only: pick one or more groups under Groups.
  4. Click Save.

A chip next to the role shows the scope: All groups, or the number of groups, such as 2 groups. Hover over the chip to see the group names.

To change the scope later, click the chip. The Instructor scope dialog opens again with the same options.

When groups are not turned on for your organization, Instructor always covers the whole space, and no scope dialog appears.

Assign an instructor from a group’s card

You can also start from the group:

  1. Open the space and go to the Groups tab.
  2. On the group’s card, find Instructors:. It lists the group’s instructors, or “none yet”.
  3. Click Assign an instructor.
  4. Under Member, pick an existing member of the space.
  5. Click Save.

The member keeps any groups they already cover and gains this one. An instructor who covered all groups becomes limited to this group only.

Each group card also shows its live member count. Click the count to open the Members tab filtered to that group.

What an instructor limited to groups can do

An instructor limited to selected groups:

  • Sees and grades only the learners in their groups, on every results page and report in the space.
  • Can pick only their own groups in the Group and Filter by group filters.
  • Can run and share the space’s simulations, like any instructor.

They cannot:

  • See learners outside their groups, or learners who belong to no group.
  • Change the space’s settings.
  • Add or delete simulations, or manage members.

An instructor limited to groups who has no groups yet sees no learners until you assign some.

Instructors who come from your LMS

If the space is connected to a learning management system (LMS) through LTI, you don’t need to set anything. When an instructor opens Cesura from their LMS course, Cesura limits them to that course’s group automatically.
