How Quiz Results Appear in Excel Exports

When you export simulation data to Excel in the Full Report format, quiz results are included on their own sheet in the Excel file. This guide explains how that sheet is structured and organized. The Simple Table and Coded Forms formats lay quiz answers out differently, one row per run; see Exporting your data to Excel for research & analysis.

Overview

The Full Report includes quiz results on a dedicated Quiz Results sheet, making it easy to analyze quiz performance alongside other simulation data. Submissions of every quiz in the activity are included on that one sheet.

Accessing Excel Exports

Step 1: Navigate to Your Space

  1. Go to Your Space: Navigate to the space containing the simulation you want to export
  2. Find the Simulation: Locate the activity on the space's Content tab

Step 2: Export the Data

  1. Click Export Data: Open the activity card's menu and choose Export Data
  2. Select Export Format: In the Export Results dialog, choose Full Report (the dialog starts on Simple Table), then click Export
  3. Download the File: The Excel file will download to your computer

Note: The filename will include the space name, simulation name, and a timestamp (e.g., MySpace_MySimulation_20250115_143022.xlsx  )

Excel File Structure

The Full Report Excel file contains multiple sheets:

  1. Summary Dashboard - Overview of all simulation runs

Quiz Result Sheets

Sheet Organization

  • One Sheet for All Quizzes: Every quiz in the activity shares one sheet
  • Sheet Name: The sheet is named Quiz Results
  • All Submissions: All quiz submissions from all simulation runs are included in the same sheet

Sheet Structure

Each quiz result sheet has the following columns:

  1. Run ID - The unique identifier for the simulation run
  2. User Name - The name of the participant who completed the quiz
  3. Group - The participant's group in the space, if the space uses groups
  4. User ID - The unique identifier for the user
  5. Completion Date - When the quiz was submitted (formatted as date and time)
  6. Grade (%) - The percentage score (e.g., 85.0)
  7. Correct Count - Number of questions answered correctly
  8. Total Questions - Total number of questions in the quiz
  9. Question Name - The internal field name for the question (e.g., "q1", "question_1")
  10. Question Title - The actual question text as shown to participants
  11. User Answer - The participant's answer to the question
  12. Correct Answer - The correct answer(s) for the question
  13. Is Correct - Whether the participant's answer was correct ("Yes" or "No")

When you export a whole space with Export space data, the Quiz Results sheet also has an Activity column.

Row Structure

Important: Each row represents one question-answer pair. This means:

  • Each graded question gets a row, so if a quiz has 5 questions, each quiz submission will create 5 rows
  • Summary information (Run ID, User Name, Grade, etc.) is only shown in the first row for each quiz submission
  • Subsequent rows for the same quiz submission will have empty cells for the summary columns
  • This structure makes it easy to filter, sort, and analyze individual questions

Example:

Run ID | User Name | Group | User ID | Completion Date | Grade | Correct | Total | Question Name | Question Title | User Answer | Correct Answer | Is Correct
----------|-----------|---------|---------|----------------------|-------|---------|-------|---------------|----------------------|-------------|----------------|------------
run-123 | John Doe | Group A | user-1 | 2025-01-15 14:30:22 | 80.0 | 4 | 5 | q1 | What is the capital? | Paris | Paris | Yes
          | | | | | | | | q2 | What is 2+2? | 4 | 4 | Yes
          | | | | | | | | q3 | What is 5+5? | 9 | 10 | No
          | | | | | | | | q4 | What is 3+3? | 6 | 6 | Yes
          | | | | | | | | q5 | What is 4+4? | 8 | 8 | Yes

Understanding the Data

Question Name vs. Question Title

  • Question Name: This is the internal identifier used by the system (e.g., "q1", "question_1")
  • Question Title: This is the actual question text that participants see (e.g., "What is the capital of France?")

Why Both?: Having both allows you to:

  • Use Question Name for consistent analysis across different quiz versions
  • Use Question Title to understand what participants actually saw
  • Match questions even if the title changes in future quiz edits

Answer Formats

Answers are formatted based on the question type:

  • Single Choice (Radio Buttons): Shows the selected option text (e.g., "Option A" or "Paris")
  • Multiple Choice (Checkboxes): Shows all selected options, joined with commas (e.g., "Option A, Option B, Option C")
  • Choice Text: Options appear as the text the author wrote, in the quiz’s language
  • Empty Answers: If a question wasn't answered, the User Answer column will be empty and Is Correct is "No". A conditional question the participant never answered has no row at all

Correct Answer Indicators

  • "Yes": The participant's answer matches the correct answer
  • "No": The participant's answer does not match the correct answer
  • For Multiple Choice: All correct answers must be selected (and no incorrect ones) for "Is Correct" to be "Yes"

Grade Calculation

  • Grade (%): Calculated as (points earned / points available) × 100. Each question weighs its Score (Points): a question with no score set counts 1, and a question with a score of 0 weighs nothing. If nobody changed the scores, this equals (Correct Count / Total Questions) × 100. A question with no correct answer set is left out of the grade but still counted in Total Questions
  • Total Questions: Counts every graded question, including questions grouped inside a panel. Hidden questions never count. A question that appears only under a condition counts only when the participant answered it
  • Displayed: As a number with one decimal place (e.g., 85.0 for 85%), so you can average and sort it directly
  • Shown Only in First Row: The grade appears only in the first row for each quiz submission

  • Pivot Tables: Create summary tables showing:
    • Average scores per question
    • Correct answer rates
    • Performance by user
    • Performance by simulation run
  • Charts: Visualize:
    • Score distributions with histograms
    • Question difficulty with bar charts
    • Performance trends over time with line charts

Tips for Working with Quiz Results

Understanding the Structure

  • Remember: Each row is one question-answer pair, not one quiz submission
  • First Row Contains Summary: The first row for each quiz submission contains all summary data (Grade, Correct Count, etc.)
  • Subsequent Rows: Following rows for the same submission have empty summary cells
  • Grouping: Use Run ID, User Name, or Completion Date to group related rows together

Data Quality

  • Check for Empty Answers: Some questions may not have been answered (empty User Answer column)
  • Verify Question Titles: Question titles may change if quizzes were edited after responses were collected
  • Date Formatting: Completion dates are in a standard format (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS)

Excel Features to Use

  • Freeze Panes: Freeze the header row to keep column names visible while scrolling
  • Conditional Formatting:
    • Highlight "Is Correct" = "Yes" in green
    • Highlight "Is Correct" = "No" in red
    • Color-code grades (e.g., green for 80%+, yellow for 60-79%, red for below 60%)
  • Pivot Tables: Create summary tables of:
    • Average scores per question
    • Correct answer rates
    • Performance by user or simulation run
  • Charts: Visualize:
    • Score distributions
    • Question difficulty
    • Performance trends

Multiple Quizzes

If your simulation includes multiple quizzes:

  • One Shared Sheet: All quizzes share the Quiz Results sheet
  • Telling Quizzes Apart: Use the Question Name and Question Title columns to tell which quiz an answer came from
  • Consistent Structure: Every row has the same column structure, making it easy to compare

Troubleshooting

Quiz Results Not Appearing

If you don't see the Quiz Results sheet in your Excel export:

  1. Check the Format: The Quiz Results sheet exists only in the Full Report format
  2. Check What You Included: If you cleared Form answers under Include in the export dialog, quiz results are left out too
  3. Check if Quizzes Were Completed: The Quiz Results sheet only appears if at least one quiz was completed
  4. Verify Quiz Configuration: Ensure quizzes are properly configured in the Simulation
  5. Check Export Date: Make sure you're exporting data from a time period when quizzes were completed

Missing Data

If some quiz data seems missing:

  1. Check All Sheets: Make sure you're looking at the Quiz Results sheet
  2. Verify Completion: Ensure participants actually submitted the quizzes (not just started them)
  3. Check Filters: Make sure no Excel filters are hiding data
  4. Review First Rows: Remember that summary data (Grade, etc.) only appears in the first row for each submission

Question Titles Not Showing

If you see question names but not titles:

  1. Quiz Structure: The quiz may not have titles defined for all questions
  2. Quiz Version: If the quiz was edited after responses were collected, titles may differ between older and newer submissions
  3. Multilingual: Check whether the question has text in the language the participant was shown

Incorrect Scores

If scores seem wrong:

  1. Review Correct Answers: Verify that correct answers are properly marked in the quiz
  2. Check Question Types: Ensure questions are configured correctly (single vs. multiple choice)
  3. Review Answer Matching: For multiple choice, all correct answers must be selected
  4. Check Hidden and Conditional Questions: Hidden questions are never graded, and a conditional question counts only when it was answered, so Total Questions can differ between participants
  5. Check Calculations: Verify that Grade = (Correct Count / Total Questions) × 100. This holds only when every question has the same Score (Points); when scores differ, the grade weighs each question by its points. If a question has no correct answer set, it is left out of the grade but still counted in Total Questions, so the two won't match

Best Practices

Before Exporting

  • Verify Quizzes Are Complete: Make sure participants have completed the quizzes you want to analyze
  • Check Quiz Status: Ensure quizzes are active and properly linked to the Simulation

After Exporting

  • Review the Quiz Results Sheet: Check that all expected quizzes appear in it
  • Verify Data Completeness: Spot-check a few rows to ensure data looks correct
  • Save a Copy: Keep the original export as a backup before making changes

For Analysis

  • Create Summary Sheets: Use pivot tables to create summary views
  • Document Your Analysis: Add notes or comments in Excel to document your findings
  • Use Consistent Formatting: Apply consistent formatting for easier comparison
  • Focus on First Rows: When calculating averages or totals, filter to show only first rows (where summary data appears)

Example Use Cases

Use Case 1: Analyzing Pre-Simulation Quizzes

  1. Open the Quiz Results sheet
  2. Filter by "Is Correct" = "No" to see which questions participants struggled with
  3. Create a pivot table to see the average score per question
  4. Compare with simulation performance from the Summary Dashboard

Use Case 2: Identifying Problem Questions

  1. Open the Quiz Results sheet
  2. Filter by a specific question title
  3. Count how many "No" values appear in the "Is Correct" column
  4. Review "User Answer" to see common wrong answers
  5. Use this information to improve the question or simulation content

Use Case 3: Tracking Participant Progress

  1. Use Run ID to group all quiz results from the same participant
  2. Compare scores across different quizzes (pre vs. post-simulation)
  3. Track how participant performance changes over time
  4. Identify participants who may need additional support

Next Steps

After reviewing quiz results in Excel:
