How to Use Quizzes in Simulations

Quizzes can be integrated into Simulations in two ways: as steps before the simulation starts, or as report steps after the simulation, in the results report. Both are added on the Activity steps page of the Simulation editor. This guide explains how to add, configure, and manage quizzes within your Simulations.

Understanding Quiz Placement

Before the Simulation (Pre-Simulation Quizzes)

When to Use:

  • Assess participants' knowledge before they start the simulation
  • Set expectations or provide context
  • Test prerequisite knowledge

When They Appear:

  • Before the simulation conversation begins
  • Participants must submit the quiz before they can move on. Their score does not matter: any submitted quiz lets them continue

Display After Completion:

  • You can control how quiz results are shown using the "Quiz Summary Display Mode" setting
  • Options range from a simple "Thank You" message to full detailed results

Report Steps (Post-Simulation Quizzes)

When to Use:

  • Assess what participants learned from the simulation
  • Test retention and understanding
  • Provide feedback on performance

When They Appear:

  • In the simulation report after completion
  • As a separate step alongside the other report steps (Feedback, Evaluator Chat, etc.)

Display After Completion:

  • Results are shown in the report step
  • What participants see is set by the same "Quiz Summary Display Mode" setting as for quizzes before the simulation

Managing Quizzes in Simulations

Editing a Quiz

  1. Find the Quiz: Locate the quiz step in Activity steps
  2. Click to Edit: Expand the quiz step to open the editor
  3. Make Changes:
    • Edit questions
    • Change correct answers
    • Modify quiz title or description
    • Adjust display settings
  4. Save: Save the Simulation to keep your changes

Removing a Quiz

  1. Find the Quiz: Locate the quiz step in Activity steps
  2. Delete: Click the remove button for that step
  3. Confirm: Confirm the deletion if prompted
  4. Save: Save the Simulation

Note: Once removed, the quiz no longer appears in that Simulation. There is no quiz library to add it back from, so you would need to recreate it.

Reordering Quizzes

  1. Drag and Drop: Drag quiz steps up or down in Activity steps to reorder them. You can also drag a step across the Simulation marker to move it between before and after the simulation

Duplicating Quizzes

If you want to use the same quiz in multiple places:

  1. Create the Quiz: Create your quiz in one step
  2. Recreate: Quiz steps can't be copied, so add a new quiz step and recreate the questions

Quiz Display Modes

Understanding Display Modes

The "Quiz Summary Display Mode" setting controls what participants see after completing a quiz:

Thank You Only

  • Shows only a thank you message
  • No score or results shown
  • Best for: Quizzes used primarily for engagement or participation tracking

Grade Only

  • Shows only the percentage score (e.g., "85%") and how many questions were answered correctly
  • No question-level details
  • Best for: Quick assessments where you want to show performance without detailed feedback

Grade + Correct/Incorrect

  • Shows the percentage score
  • Indicates which questions were answered correctly or incorrectly
  • Does not show correct answers
  • Best for: Most assessment scenarios where you want to show performance without giving away answers

Full Details

  • Shows the percentage score
  • Shows all questions with user answers
  • Indicates correct/incorrect for each question
  • Shows the correct answer for each question answered incorrectly
  • Best for: Learning-focused assessments where you want participants to review and learn from mistakes

Setting Display Mode

  1. Select the Quiz Step: Expand the quiz step in Activity steps
  2. Find Display Mode Setting: Look for the "Quiz Summary Display Mode" dropdown below the quiz editor
  3. Select Mode: Choose your preferred display mode
  4. Save: Save the Simulation

Note: Display mode works the same way for quizzes before and after the simulation. If you don't change it, participants see Grade + Correct/Incorrect.

Best Practices

Pre-Simulation Quizzes

  • Keep Them Short: Participants haven't started the simulation yet, so keep quizzes brief
  • Set Expectations: Use quizzes to help participants understand what they'll learn
  • Participants Always Continue: A participant must submit the quiz to move on, but a low score never blocks them
  • Use Appropriate Display Mode: "Grade Only" or "Thank You Only" may be best to avoid discouraging participants

Post-Simulation Quizzes (Report Steps)

  • Assess Learning: Focus on testing what participants learned from the simulation
  • Provide Feedback: Use "Full Details" mode to help participants learn from mistakes
  • Make It Relevant: Ensure quiz questions relate directly to the simulation content
  • Review Performance: Use quiz results to identify areas where participants struggled

General Tips

  • Test Your Quizzes: Always preview and test quizzes before using them in Simulations
  • Verify Correct Answers: Double-check that all correct answers are properly marked
  • Consider Timing: Think about when participants will take the quiz and how that affects their experience
  • Review Results: Use quiz results to improve your Simulations and identify learning gaps

How quizzes are graded

The grade is the points the participant earned out of the points available. Each question weighs its Score (Points). A question with no score set counts 1, so a quiz where nobody changed the scores grades every question equally. A question with a score of 0 weighs nothing. When any question has a score other than 1, the participant's result screen also shows the points, for example "Points: 7 of 10".

Which questions count toward the grade

  • Questions inside panels: A quiz created through the API or imported as JSON can group questions inside a panel. Those questions are graded and counted like any other
  • Questions without a correct answer: A question with no correct answer set is left out of the grade. New questions start with no correct answer, and the quiz editor's issues chip lists every graded question that still needs one
  • Hidden questions: A question that is hidden, or sits inside a hidden panel or page, is never graded
  • Conditional questions: A question that appears only under a condition counts only when the participant answered it, so a skipped conditional question never counts against them

Note: The quiz editor does not build panels, but it keeps them. You can open a quiz that contains panels in the quiz editor and save it: the panels and their questions stay.

Troubleshooting

Quiz Not Appearing

  • Check Step Order: Make sure the quiz step is in the correct position
  • Verify Enabled Status: Ensure the section or report step is enabled. A report step that is switched off is skipped entirely, even if its quiz questions are required
  • Review Permissions: Verify participants have access to the Simulation

Quiz Results Not Showing

  • Check Display Mode: Verify the display mode is set appropriately
  • Review Quiz Completion: Ensure participants actually completed the quiz
  • Check Report Settings: For report steps, verify the step is enabled

Can't Edit Quiz

  • Check Permissions: Ensure you have permission to edit the Simulation
  • Check Organization Membership: Adding quizzes requires your account to belong to an organization
  • Try Refreshing: Refresh the page and try again

Quiz Not Saving

  • Save the Simulation: Remember to save the entire Simulation, not just the quiz
  • Check for Errors: Look for error messages that might indicate what's wrong
  • Verify Required Fields: Make sure all required fields are filled

Next Steps

After adding quizzes to your Simulation:

  1. Test the Flow: Run through the Simulation as a participant to see how quizzes appear
  2. Review Results: Check how quiz results are displayed in reports
  3. Gather Feedback: Ask participants about their quiz experience
  4. Iterate: Use feedback and results to improve your quizzes
