Add Cesura activities from your LMS
Instructors add Cesura activities to a course from inside the LMS, through the Add a Cesura activity picker. The picker groups activities by space, lets you pick several at once, and warns you about anything that will stop learners from opening an activity. Each activity you add becomes a link in the course, and scores flow back to the gradebook.
This article is for instructors. Your organization admin must connect the LMS first; see Setting up an LTI 1.3 integration with your LMS.
Before you start
- Your LMS is connected to Cesura with LTI 1.3.
- You have a Cesura account in the organization, with the same email address your LMS sends. If your organization trusts every instructor from your LMS, you don't need an account.
- The activities are in a Cesura space you can reach. You see the spaces you own, and the spaces where you are a member with more than view-only access. A membership that has expired or been turned off does not count. Testing spaces never appear.
- The space uses the LMS access level (recommended). With LMS — SCORM / LTI 1.3, learners can open the activities only from your LMS.
Open the picker
- In your LMS course, add external tool (LTI) content and choose Cesura. The action is often called Add content or Select content, depending on your LMS.
- Cesura opens the Add a Cesura activity picker in the LMS window.
The picker appears in one of two forms, depending on your LMS:
- Several at once. If your LMS accepts several items in one step, you get the full picker described below.
- One at a time. Otherwise, you get a simple table of activities and spaces. Click Embed next to the activity you want.
Add several activities at once
- Find the activities. Activities are grouped by space. Type in Search activities…, or choose a space in Filter by space. Choose All spaces to see everything again.
- Tick each activity you want. To take every activity in a space, click Select all {n} in {space}. While a whole space is selected, its activities can't be ticked one by one. To choose individually instead, untick Select all {n} in {space} again.
- Check the bar at the bottom. It shows how many activities you selected. Click Clear to start over.
- Click Add {n} to course, where {n} is the number you selected.
- If a confirmation appears, read it and click Add, or Cancel to change your selection.
The activities are added to your course as separate items. Each one reports its score to your LMS gradebook when a learner finishes.
Limit: 50 activities per step. If you select more, the picker shows "Limit is 50 per insert — remove {n}." A space with more than 50 activities shows "Too many to add at once — select individually." Add the rest in a second step.
What the badges mean
Each activity shows its type: Simulation, Content, or Challenge. Other badges flag an activity that learners may not be able to open. You can still add it, but fix the cause in Cesura before your learners need it.
| Badge | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | The activity is not active, so learners cannot open it. | Make the activity active in its space. |
| Ended {date} | The activity's availability window closed on that date. | Extend the activity's availability dates. |
| Opens {date} | Learners cannot open the activity until that date. | Nothing, if that is intended. Otherwise, change the start date. |
| Needs code | The activity requires an access code. | Give learners the code, or turn off the access code. |
| Creator budget used up | The space owner has no credit allowance left, so runs cannot start. | Ask your organization admin to raise the allowance. |
| No credits left | The organization has no credits, so runs cannot start. | Ask your organization admin to add credits. |
| Credits expired | The organization's credits have expired, so runs cannot start. | Ask your organization admin to renew credits. |
The three credit badges appear only for instructors who sign in with their own Cesura account.
The confirmation step
Before it adds activities, the picker asks you to confirm with Add {n} activities to your course? when:
- Any selected activity carries a warning badge.
- You selected a whole space.
- Your selection is over the limit of 50.
The confirmation counts each problem. For example, it says how many activities are drafts, are past their availability window, open at a later date, require an access code, or cannot be started because their space cannot pay for runs. If your selection is over the limit, Add is unavailable until you remove activities.
If the picker is empty
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| "We couldn't match your LMS account to a Cesura user in this organization…" | Your LMS email does not match a Cesura account in this organization, or your LMS does not share your email with Cesura. Ask your Cesura administrator for access. |
| "Your LMS email is not on the approved list for embedding Cesura activities." | Your organization limits which instructors can add activities. Ask your Cesura administrator to add your email. |
| "Nothing to embed yet…" | You have no space with activities. In Cesura, open the simulation from the Library, click Share with a group, and put it in a space. Then open the picker again. |
| "No space in this organization is shared for LTI embedding yet…" | Your organization trusts instructors from your LMS, but no space is shared with outside instructors. Ask your Cesura administrator. |
| "No activities match…" | Nothing matches your search. Change the search, or click Show all spaces. |
| "This session has expired…" | Close the picker window and add the activity again from your course. |
| "Some of the selected activities are no longer available…" | Click Clear and choose again. |
Organization admins
If you are an organization admin who authors content, the picker lists every working space in your organization, the same spaces you can reach in Cesura. Your organization can turn this off for an LMS; then you see only your own spaces.
